US President Donald Trump is considering allowing the delivery of the first JASSM air-launched cruise missiles to Ukraine. They are planned to be integrated with the Ukrainian fleet of F-16 fighter jets.
This is reported by Military Watch , citing its own sources familiar with the matter. According to them, the supply of other long-range missiles to Ukraine for strikes deep into Russian territory was also considered.
The publication notes that information about the possible supply of JASSM missiles appeared after other reports from July 14. At that time, it was already said that the US was thinking about sending Ukraine long-range missiles that could hit targets in Russia. This also coincides with Trump’s recent words that Ukraine would receive another Patriot air defense system. At that time, he also hinted at other modern weapons.
High-precision JASSM missiles, which have limited radar-evasion capabilities and a 450-kilogram warhead, could significantly strengthen the Ukrainian Air Force.
These missiles will be equipped with the Ukrainian Air Force’s F-16 fleet. American fighters are capable of effectively launching JASSM while deep behind Ukrainian positions.
JASSM missiles began to be used in 2003. Now only four countries have them, among them Poland, which has 110 F-16 fighters. Very few countries have JASSM, and all of them are Western states. This indicates a very strict policy regarding their export. For example, South Korea was denied the purchase of these missiles back in the early 2010s. Probably, it was because of this “sensitivity” that these missiles were not previously transferred to Ukraine.
Ukraine has already converted its old Soviet Su-27 and Su-24M aircraft to launch the British and French Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles. These missiles are similar to the American JASSM. But there are not enough European missiles. That is why Ukraine is asking the US to transfer American missiles to it. And if the Armed Forces receive them, the Ukrainian F-16 aircraft will become much more powerful.
The American AGM-158 JASSM (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile) is a precision-guided air-to-surface cruise missile developed by Lockheed Martin Corporation. It is designed to engage important, highly protected targets, both stationary and moving, in all weather conditions and at any time of day, from distances beyond the range of enemy air defenses.
Created using low-radar-observation technologies. The missile is equipped with a turbojet engine. The guidance system, along with an inertial control system with correction from a GPS satellite signal receiver with a high degree of electronic protection, uses a modern infrared homing head, and an autonomous target recognition system is also installed.
JASSMs can hit targets at a distance of up to 370 km, and newer versions can hit targets at a distance of up to 1,000 km.
As OBOZ.UA reported, the United States will send additional Patriot missiles to Ukraine. This was announced by US President Donald Trump on July 13. He said that the purchase will not be financed from the US budget, without specifying how the payment will be made.
