Background:

Trump first said he intends to declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory on 14 August during a rally in New Jersey. Later, however, a White House official told the Wall Street Journal that Trump was joking.
Iran responded by saying the Strait of Hormuz could not be seized by tweet, aircraft carrier, executive order or campaign speech.
On 18 August, Trump said no talks with Iran are currently under way or planned.
