Greenland’s prime minister said the island is “choosing Denmark.”

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, at a press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, declared that the island “chooses Denmark” and will not belong to or be governed by Washington. This statement angered US President Donald Trump.

“If we had to choose between the US and Denmark right now, we would choose Denmark, NATO and the EU,” The Guardian quotes Nielsen as saying .

He added that “the island’s goal and desire is peaceful dialogue with an emphasis on cooperation.” Trump’s desire to seize the island, he said, is also a matter of “international law and our right to our own country.”

At the same time, the US President reacted sharply to this statement, lashing out at Nielsen with threats.

Reporters asked Trump to comment on the claim that Greenland wants to remain in union with Denmark, to which he asked: “Who said that?”

Upon hearing that the Greenlandic prime minister had made this statement, Trump said he “didn’t know who he was” and “didn’t know anything about him.”

“Well, that’s their problem. I don’t agree with him. I don’t know anything about him, but it would be a big problem for him,” the White House chief said.
