Tariffs against Europe will increase in stages unless the island is transferred to US control.

The United States is imposing additional tariffs on imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland due to their opposition to the American annexation of Greenland . US President Donald Trump announced this on the social media platform TruthSocial .

“For many years, we have effectively subsidized Denmark, all the countries of the European Union, and other states, without charging them tariffs or any other form of compensation. Now, after centuries, it’s time for Denmark to repay – world peace is at stake,” he wrote.

Trump reiterated the claim that China and Russia allegedly want to take Greenland for themselves, and Denmark can do nothing about it. “Their ‘defense’ currently consists of two dog teams, one of which was recently added,” Trump wrote.

According to Trump, only the United States, under his personal leadership, is capable of defending the island.

At the same time, the American president expressed outrage that Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland “made trips to Greenland for an unknown purpose,” thereby “creating an extremely dangerous situation for the safety, security and survival of our planet.”

“These countries, by engaging in this very dangerous game, have created a level of risk that is unacceptable and unsustainable. Therefore, in order to protect global peace and security, decisive action must be taken to bring this potentially threatening situation to a swift and decisive end,” Trump added.

In light of the above, the US President announced the imposition of additional tariffs of 10% on all imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland. The new rules will take effect on February 1, and on June 1, this tariff will be increased to 25%.

“It will remain in effect until an agreement is reached for the full and complete purchase of Greenland. The United States has been trying to make this deal happen for over 150 years. Many presidents have tried – and for good reasons – but Denmark has always refused,” Trump wrote.

Europe has sent military reinforcements to Greenland.

As UNIAN reported, in January, several European countries, in agreement with Denmark, sent military units to Greenland to strengthen security and demonstrate a shared commitment to the defense of this strategically important Arctic region. This occurred amid Trump’s statements about the island’s vulnerability to Russian and Chinese threats and demands for the island to be handed over to the United States.

At Denmark’s request, Sweden sent officers to participate in the joint exercise, and Norway sent two military personnel. France and Germany also confirmed the deployment of contingents: French units arrived in Nuuk, and a German reconnaissance group of 13 military personnel departed for the island to support the operations. Furthermore, representatives from the United Kingdom, Finland, and the Netherlands also joined the deployment in various capacities as part of Operation Arctic Endurance, which aims to enhance Arctic capabilities.
