US President Donald Trump intends to implement and strictly enforce tough new sanctions against the Russian oil industry, which have prompted Lukoil to sell off its assets , US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said.

According to him, this is necessary in order to force Russian President Vladimir Putin to begin negotiations to end the war with Ukraine.

“We have imposed these sanctions and we intend to enforce them,” Whitaker, the U.S. permanent representative to NATO, said in an interview with Bloomberg .

It is noted that after the announcement of the sanctions, oil prices jumped, but the market reaction was restrained due to uncertainty about how seriously the White House intends to enforce them – given that Russia has already faced tough sanctions since the first days of the war.

“Perhaps this is the step that will allow Putin to sit down at the negotiating table and end this war, at least starting with a ceasefire so that a final settlement can be agreed upon,” Whitaker noted.

According to him, this is just the beginning:

“President Trump holds all the trump cards in his hands – and this is just one of them. He still has many moves ahead of him.”

US sanctions against Russia

Last week, the U.S. Treasury Department blacklisted Russia’s largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, in a new attempt to end the war by depriving Moscow of the revenue it needs to wage it, the first major package of financial sanctions against Russia since Trump took office.

German Economy Minister Ekaterina Reiche said that the US government has provided written guarantees that Rosneft’s German business will be exempt from new energy sanctions .

  1. Sanctions need to be applied not just to get putler to negotiate, but to remove his filth from Ukraine.
