In the future, relations with America will never be as trusting as they were until recently.
By imposing high tariffs on imports into the United States, Donald Trump has shown contempt for major trading partners and has permanently damaged relations with them, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said, as quoted by Politico .
“We know that relations will never be the same. This is my message to Europeans: relations with the United States will never be the same,” she said at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers.
Canada, the EU, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea have been hit with high import tariffs from the US, the highest since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Joly believes it is significant that the tariffs have hit key US trading partners.
“We buy more from the US than from the UK, France, China and Japan combined. When you treat your best customer the way you treated us… it means you want to fundamentally change the way you operate,” said the Canadian representative.
She also noted that the tariffs would ultimately become an indirect tax on the American people, who would pay for it by buying imported goods at a higher price. Jolie urged Europeans to “get this message” to US citizens to influence the US administration.

As UNIAN reported, an American legal group has sued the US president over his imposition of tough import tariffs. The lawyers say Trump illegally circumvented Congress and the Emergency International Economic Powers Act of 1977.
Trump himself has already said he is willing to lower tariffs if other countries offer him something “phenomenal .” “Tariffs give us a huge negotiating opportunity,” Trump said, adding that “every country has been calling us.”
