If results are not achieved quickly, Trump tends to shift his focus to other issues.

Donald Trump has probably already given up on peace talks in Ukraine and has switched to other topics where he has a better chance of achieving easy success, Valeriy Chaly, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States in 2015-2019, said in an interview with Ukrainian Radio .

Thus, the journalist asked the diplomat whether he shared the widespread opinion that the current US president seeks quick and easy victories, and therefore has a tendency to switch to another topic if he cannot cope with the current problem. 

“Everything you said, I agree with every word. It seems obvious. And I’ll tell you, the loss of interest of the US, the current administration, in the issue of countering the Russian war in Ukraine is worse than those even controversial steps that the current American administration is taking,” Chaly said. 

The former Ukrainian ambassador to the United States emphasizes that Donald Trump’s strategy was not pro-Ukrainian from the beginning. All the new American president wanted was to achieve a temporary ceasefire for a month and then declare that all goals had been achieved. 

Despite the fact that Trump is gradually losing interest in the war in Ukraine, Chaly is convinced that the chances of returning the US to the bright side still exist.

“Because they have already understood that Putin and Russia are “leading them by the nose.” Donald Trump simply won’t say it publicly, but he has already understood that they don’t want any peace. They don’t even want to “give” him 30 days so that he can declare himself a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize. Putin doesn’t even want to do this for him. We need to show by all means that Donald Trump has already made so many political statements… He has already invested his political capital in this. That is, we need to make sure that he stays in the game and gives a result for which everyone will applaud him, that is, a victory. And this is not just a 30-day ceasefire, but a guarantee of security for Ukraine, the de-occupation of part of Ukraine’s territory, the supply of weapons. I think that such a chance still remains,” the diplomat said.
