Canadian Green Party leader Elizabeth May criticized newly elected President of the United States of America Donald Trump for making a joke about Canada.

The politician recently “suggested” that the country become the 51st state, then posted an AI-generated image of himself standing in the mountains next to a Canadian flag.

Trump also recently called Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “the governor of the Great Country of Canada.”

May called jokes about the 51st state not funny and called on political parties to be united in protecting the country’s reputation,  The Hill reports :

“We have to be very, very careful with the president-elect, and we have to come together to make sure we don’t create any cracks that allow Fox News or Mr. Trump’s social media to exploit us and say things about Canada that are not true.”
