Trump’s team does not have a unified vision of what to do next to end the war.
The quickest way to end the war in Ukraine is to satisfy Russia’s demand for “ownership” of the four Ukrainian regions that the Kremlin formally annexed in 2022. This was allegedly stated recently by his special representative for the Middle East and chief negotiator with the Russians, Steve Witkoff, during a meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Reuters reports, citing two U.S. officials and five other people familiar with the situation, that the conversation took place shortly after Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev visited Washington. Witkoff has made this point before, including in an interview with Tucker Carlson last month.
But Keith Kellogg, who the US president has appointed as his special representative for Ukraine, opposed Witkoff’s option during a meeting with Trump. He noted that Ukraine, while willing to negotiate some terms related to the disputed land, would never agree to Russia’s full ownership of the territories, two sources said.
As Reuters notes, that meeting ended without Trump making any concrete decision about changing the US strategy regarding the war in Ukraine. After that, Witkoff left for talks in Russia, which are taking place at this time.
According to the publication’s interlocutors, there are increasing disputes within Trump’s team about how to break the deadlock between Ukraine and Russia, in particular between Witkoff and Kellogg.
Witkoff, a longtime Trump friend who helped secure key diplomatic victories for the president, has garnered some support from Republican Party skeptics on Ukraine, but his proposals have sparked outrage among other Republicans who believe the administration has swung too sharply toward Moscow, the publication writes.

I think he wants this mineral deal, then drop Ukraine from his life. He is petrified to go up against putler, so if Ukraine drag this out, they can force Trump to do something positive for once in his life.
I cannot find anything positive that this felon has ever done. I think he’s wholly incapable of doing good.
This administration is as stupid as stupid can be. We had a surrendering of another country’s lands to a vicious dictator once before, which resulted in a terrible world war, but knowing history is not important to stupid people and doing the right thing, either.
