Trump changes tactics, now claiming he’d do more for Ukraine than Biden did

15 FEBRUARY 2024

Former US President Donald Trump, who is running for office again, has told his supporters that he would do more to protect Ukraine than current US leader Joe Biden.

Details: At a campaign rally, Trump said that under a Biden presidency, Vladimir Putin would “be given everything he wants, including Ukraine.”

“That’s a gift. He’s got a gift,” Trump added.

The NYT notes that Biden has been calling on world leaders and the US Congress for months to provide Ukraine with more military aid and that Trump has been undermining these efforts, but on 14 February, the former president tried to change the scenario, saying he would do more to defend Ukraine than Biden.

Background:

  • Trump has repeatedly spoken positively about Putin and assured him that they get along well, claiming he can stop the war between Russia and Ukraine in a day
  • Now Trump has called Putin’s statement that it would be better for Russia if Joe Biden won the US election a “compliment”. Putin allegedly believes that Biden is more predictable.
  • Biden has repeatedly promised to help Ukraine defend itself “[for] as long as it takes”, while Trump has made it clear that he would consider allowing Russia to “take over” part of Ukraine as part of negotiations to end the war.

  1. This would mark a complete turnaround in Trump’s strategy on Ukraine. But, can he be trusted? Actions speak louder than cheap words, and so far he’s directly responsible for blocking any further aid to the hard-pressed country. He’s already responsible for and X amount of deaths. If his words are to be trusted in any way, then his next move should be to give his little ass-kissers in Congress the go-ahead for the aid package. But, I doubt that this will happen.

    • Right, Mr. Ofp. Now’s the time for Zelensky and friends of Ukraine to use political Aikido. Take Trump by his word, compliment him for his public support for the attacked democracy and apoeal to his vanity by publicly stating that only he has the powrr to get the stalled bill through Congress. He can react by either withdrawing his de facto veto and then pose as the saviour of Ukraine – a political success for him that’s a small price to pay for getting the arms deliveries rolling again – or by weaseling out, proving to hus pro-Ukrainian friends like RSM that he’s only a hypocrite. Both good outcomes. Let’s see how this goes.

      • That might not be such a bad idea, Mr. Gray. Trump’s vanity is a big weak spot in his persona.

  2. “Former US President Donald Trump, who is running for office again, has told his supporters that he would do more to protect Ukraine than current US leader Joe Biden.”

If that is true, he can easily prove it by calling off his attack dogs; aka the magaputler shitheads. Then disown and denounce MTG and JDV for the nazi-loving pigs that they are. Then he’d have to disassociate himself from the hateful anti-Ukraine comments made by DT Jr.

      • There is no “lol” about this horror. One of my friends has lost her husband to the putinaZi vermin.

If Trump turns out to be the savior of Ukraine I’d be delighted to be proved wrong. But in light of his defacto killings of thousands of Ukrainian troops, I’d prefer Haley by a long, long way. Even Biden is 1000 times better.

You haven’t even expressed your sympathy for the families who have lost their loved ones due to the magaputler aid block. Perhaps you think that is funny too?

  3. Ooh, the sexy relationship with Unca Putin is in ruins. Now that Putler fell in love with demented sleepy Joe, Donny is angry. This is the price you pay when you confide in dictators.

    • Yeah, Mike, I do think, too, that Putler made a serious mistake by hurting Trump’s vanity. The thinskinned narcissist is not the kind of guy who forgets such an insult.
Or this may be some kabuki theatre, a conspiracy between Putin and Trump, whose meaning we don’t understand yet. I’m curious how this will further develop.

      • putler’s biggest nightmare would be Biden getting re-elected, and the Dems winning both houses. All this BS from putler is just a smokescreen to hide who he really wants to be elected. You only need to listen to his propagandists to see who russia want to win the election.

        • Yeah, that had been my interpretation, too, Foccusser, but did Putin inform Trump of this intention? Judging by the thinskinned narcissist’s angry reaction, apparently not. And this creates an opportunity to exploit that sudden rift between both. Who knows, Trump may really retaliate against Putler by letting the Ukraine bill pass!

        • That’s exactly what I think, too, foccusser. The rat knows that wanting Trump too much as POTUS could backfire.

  4. Speaking as a former Trump supporter can anyone tell me WTH that statement means…will do more to protect Ukraine? Like giving more aid? Like giving away 20% of Ukraine to Putin so Ukrainians are no longer fighting? Give away Crimea for peace? Give Putin Moldova for peace? How about putting some meat on that bone before I start chewing.

    • Let’s see how Trump reacts once Zelensky thanks him for his words and support and asks him to please use his huge influence to get the stalled bill passed in Congress. Trump’s reaction will show how serious this turnaround is.

  5. Apparently, Trump thinks his fans won’t care about this sudden turnaround, which clearly shows that there’s not much reason behind his political stances, just totally subjective inpulses. And he’s probably right, they’re a bunch of fools who won’t question his phony leadership. Whatever, what’s important now is that this opens a chance for Ukraine and its supporters to get the stalled Senate bill through the House. If that takes appealing to Trump’s vanity by asking him to help, because he’s got the power to do so, so be it. President Zelensky has shown time and again to put national interest over personal feelings, so I hope that he’ll put his considerate diplomatic talent at work and reach out to Trump. Who knows, this may really work out, or it will expose the grandstanding narcissist as a pathetic hypocrite. Both would be positive outcomes.

    • I don’t believe it is just a turnaround. I really believe he knows his position on Ukraine is a losing position and he’s only trying to make it seem like he’s the big hero.
