US President Donald Trump has asked a number of countries around the world to provide their warships for a joint military operation with the US to unblock the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has stopped the movement of oil tankers.
This is reported by BBC News, citing Trump’s statement on his own Truth Social network.
The US president said he hopes China, France, Japan, South Korea and the UK will send warships to the key shipping channel so it “no longer poses a threat” from Iran.
This shipping channel must be “open and safe,” Trump added.
In turn, the United States, Trump stressed, will “bomb the coastline and constantly fire at Iranian boats and ships from the water.”
At the same time, the American head of state claims that the US has allegedly “destroyed 100% of Iran’s military potential,” but says that it is still “easy” for them to use drones, mines, and short-range missiles.
In turn, the representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Geneva, Ali Bahrani, assessed Trump’s statements about eliminating Tehran’s capabilities as “based on fabricated lies.”
Strait of Hormuz and oil
The Strait of Hormuz is a key trade artery through which about 20% of the world’s oil passes, BBC News reminds.
Typically, about 3,000 ships pass through the corridor each month. In 2025, about 20 million barrels of oil passed through the strait daily.
It is deep enough for the world’s largest crude oil tankers, and is used by major oil and LNG producers in the Middle East, as well as their customers.
- As a reminder, on March 11, the Japanese-flagged container ship One Majesty, the Marshall Islands-flagged dry cargo ship Star Gwyneth, and the Thai-flagged container ship Mayuree Naree were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz .
