Denmark has appealed to the United States to adhere to the principle of respect for the country’s territorial integrity following President Donald Trump’s decision to appoint a special envoy to Greenland.
Denmark’s position
As noted, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen today emphasized that US President Donald Trump’s decision to appoint Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland demonstrates America’s continued interest in this Arctic island.
“This appointment confirms America’s continued interest in Greenland. However, we insist that everyone, including the United States, must respect the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark,” Rasmussen said in a statement.

Trump’s encroachment on Greenland
Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the United States special envoy to Greenland.
US plans for Greenland
Recall, in early January, Trump said that Denmark should give up Greenland to protect the “free world.”
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen cannot imagine and does not believe that the United States would use military or economic force to control Greenland.
Danish Foreign Minister Rasmussen, in turn, stated that Greenland could become independent if its residents wanted it, but it would not be a US state.
CNN writes that Danish officials fear that US President Donald Trump is much more serious about acquiring Greenland than he was in his first term.
Earlier, Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede said that the island does not want to be American or Danish, but seeks independence, noting that this is nothing new.
On March 5, Trump said that the United States is ready to accept Greenland as part of its territory if the people are “in favor”: “We’ll get it ‘one way or another.'”
In November, the Greenlandic parliament passed a law restricting foreigners from buying property on the island, amid growing U.S. interest in purchasing property in Greenland.
