The new tariffs are punishment for Canada for imposing its duties in response to the first round of US tariffs.

The Canadian province of Ontario has imposed a 25 percent tariff on electricity supplied to neighboring US states . US President Donald Trump has announced new tariffs in response.

“I have directed my Secretary of Commerce to impose an additional 25% tariff, bringing it to 50%, on all steel and aluminum coming into the U.S. from Canada. This will go into effect tomorrow morning, March 12,” he wrote on Truth Social .

Trump also demanded that Canada immediately lift its tariffs on U.S. farm products, which range from 250% to 390% on various dairy products. In addition, the U.S. president is demanding that Canada lift other “egregious, long-standing tariffs,” and if that is not done, he threatens to impose significant tariffs on Canadian cars starting April 2. Trump is convinced that such a move would permanently shut down Canada’s auto industry. He added that these cars could easily be manufactured in the U.S.

Trump went on to express outrage that Canada pays “almost nothing” for national security, relying on U.S. military protection.

“This cannot continue. The only logical solution is for Canada to become our precious 51st State. This would completely eliminate all tariffs and other problems. Canadians would have their taxes significantly lower, they would be more protected – militarily and otherwise – than ever before, the Northern Border problem would disappear, and the largest, most powerful nation in the world would be even bigger, better, and stronger – and Canada would be a big part of it,” Trump wrote.

He noted that in such a scenario, the “artificial border” between the US and Canada “will finally disappear,” but the “wonderful anthem ‘O Canada’ will continue to sound – now as a symbol of a state within the US.
