Trump is preparing for a new conversation with Putin and demands that Europe completely abandon Russian oil.
US President Donald Trump has again called on European allies to do more to respond to Russian aggression while keeping the channel of dialogue open with Russian President Vladimir Putin, amid a stalemate in peace initiatives since their summit in Alaska three weeks ago, CNN reports .
According to the White House, during a phone call with EU leaders, Trump stressed that “Europe must stop buying Russian oil, which finances the war, as Russia has received 1.1 billion euros from the EU in one year.” He also stressed that European countries should put “economic pressure on China for financing Russia’s war effort.”
The American president told reporters that he plans to speak with Putin again in the near future to “figure out what we’re going to do.” He refrained from specifically answering whether he would be ready to sign new direct sanctions against Russia if Moscow delayed taking peaceful steps.
“Whatever his decision is, we’re either going to be happy with it or unhappy with it. And if we’re unhappy with it, you’ll see what happens,” Trump said in the Oval Office on Wednesday.
Despite criticism from Washington, Europe has already significantly reduced its dependence on Russian oil. In 2021, the value of imports was $16.4 billion in the first quarter, but in 2025 this figure decreased to $1.72 billion, CNN reports. EU member states have imposed an embargo on marine oil and petroleum products from Russia, but some volumes still enter the European market.
Peace talks – allies increase pressure on Russia
As UNIAN reported, despite the fact that Russia is not going to stop the war, a security system is already being built that can push the enemy towards peace. This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Ambrosetti International Economic Forum.
“I can’t reveal all the details now – many of them are very sensitive and relate to the military sphere. But we are preparing a force – on the ground, in the air and at sea – that, simply working according to plan, will put pressure on Russia to stop the war,” the head of state said.
Before that, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made a frank statement regarding the end of the war in Ukraine. He noted that he does not lose hope for peace, but also has no illusions. The German politician said that he is prepared for the war in Ukraine to drag on for a long time.
