To better shoot down shahids: Odessa’s air defense has been reinforced with another interceptor aircraft.

Another interceptor aircraft has strengthened Odessa’s air defenses.

The Dutch charity Protect Ukraine purchased a Yak-52 sports aircraft for our city, the aviation publication Scramble reported .Volunteers purchased the aircraft in the UK for €78,000. The seller was Wilco Aviation Limited.

The aircraft was delivered to us at  the end of October.

To improve its performance, the aircraft was upgraded; it has a number of differences from the base model.Wilco Aviation applied Soviet-era markings, but the brigade will repaint it in camouflage.

The aircraft will be named “Konstantin Oborin” in honor of the head of the Odessa Aeroclub, who died this summer.
As a reminder, Odessans were the first to use aging Soviet sports aircraft to destroy enemy drones.

They were initially used against reconnaissance aircraft, and later, against martyrs.

By this summer, our squadron’s pilots had shot down over 60 aerial targets. Typically, the drone is engaged by the rear gunner using an automatic rifle or other weapon.

The pilot must fly the aircraft to a safe distance from the drone to prevent shrapnel from damaging the Yak-52, which has no armor or other means of crew protection.

However, some types of electric-powered drones refuse to crash even after multiple accurate hits, so another method for quickly landing them was devised: ramming with the aircraft’s right or left wing.

It’s important to understand that ramming an enemy drone by hitting it with a wing is no easy feat—this speaks volumes about the skill of our pilots.Photo: Wilco Aviation Limited
