The UK and France agreed to grant Ukraine a license to produce Storm Shadow/SCALP missiles. The Defence Forces will gain even greater capabilities to deliver a “painful blow” to the enemy.

Valeriy Zarubin, CEO of the Ukrainian technology company BlueBird Tech, told Channel 24 this. The missile’s range is known to be approximately 250 kilometers for export versions, while the base model has a range of 560 kilometers.

What opportunities will Ukraine receive?

As Zarubin emphasized, the Storm Shadow is a high-precision cruise missile that will help thin out enemy air defenses. It would also be quite logical to use it to attack airfields and Russian military-industrial facilities.

The enemy has the capability to shoot down cruise missiles. However, the Defense Forces have repeatedly and successfully hit enemy targets using Storm Shadows. The attack on the Russian Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Sevastopol in 2023 is worth recalling.

Moreover, enemy command posts could very well be hit. This missile is capable of penetrating fortified installations.

Of course, producing this missile won’t be a universal way to defeat Russia. It adapts quickly. However, this missile flies quite low. It’s difficult to detect and shoot down,” Zarubin said.

It should be added that the Defense Forces will most likely use these missiles to destroy well-defended military installations, particularly command posts and shelters, which are significantly more difficult to destroy using drones.

  1. “Of course, producing this missile won’t be a universal way to defeat Russia. It adapts quickly.”

You can’t adapt air defences if you don’t have enough of them.

  2. The key issue is time : getting tooled up for a high tech piece of kit in wartime is quite a task.
We need to give them some more from our stocks in time for winter.
