“Peace protests” demanding to stop aid to Ukraine will only bring more war.

Those who want 𝑷𝑬𝑨𝑪𝑬 should prepare for 𝑾𝑨𝑹.

Today in the Netherlands, protesters are calling for pacifism, disarmament and an end to weapons for 🇺🇦 Ukraine, pretending that somehow rewarding the aggressor and weakening the victim will bring peace. Europeans who learned history know it’s the opposite.

Ask the Ukrainians. Ask the Polish. Heck, ask your grandparents.

The Netherlands tried neutrality and entered World War II militarily underprepared. It didn’t prevent Germany from invading. Ukraine surrendered the nuclear arsenal it inherited after the Soviet collapse and received “security assurances” concerning its sovereignty and borders, including commitments from Russia to respect Ukraine’s independence and existing borders. Russia invaded anyway.

Disarming yourself doesn’t make you peaceful. It makes you 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐌𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒. And being harmless does not make an aggressor peaceful, it simply means there is less standing in their way.

That is the fundamental problem with this kind of pacifism: it demands restraint and disarmament from those being threatened or attacked, while apparently expecting the aggressor to become peaceful in response.

And we’ve heard these arguments before. In 1939, French pacifist politician Marcel Déat asked, “Why diє for Danzig?” Why should Frenchmen risk their lives over some Polish city far away? Germany invaded 🇵🇱 Poland four months later, and France itself was invaded the following year. Different century, remarkably familiar argument: why should we care about some country over there?

Then came the Cold War. The Soviet Union deployed SS-20 nuclear missiles, while enormous demonstrations in Western Europe opposed NATO’s planned deployment of Pershing II and cruise missiles in response. French President François Mitterrand summarized the contradiction wonderfully in 1983: “The missiles are in the East, the pacifists are in the West.”

Because deterrence isn’t the opposite of peace. Its entire purpose is preventing war by convincing an aggressor that starting one will cost more than they can possibly gain.

Perhaps we’ve forgotten that because Europeans have been unbelievably spoiled by history. For most of European history, peace wasn’t normal, war was. For centuries we invaded, conquered and muгdєгed each other with depressing regularity, until after World War II something extraordinary happened: generations of Europeans grew up surrounded by peace, democracy, freedom and unprecedented prosperity.

We became so accustomed to this historically exceptional situation that we started treating it as the natural state of humanity, rather than something generations worked, fought and sacrificed to create.

And there is something deeply ironic about protesting against the means used to defend a free society while enjoying every freedom that society provides. You can march through Amsterdam, condemn your government, demand disarmament and publicly tell everyone that their defence policy is wrong. Wonderful. Our grandparents weren’t always afforded that privilege.

That freedom didn’t simply materialize because humanity collectively decided war was silly. People fought for it, sacrificed for it and diєd for it.

Our modern pacifism is an extraordinary privilege, one generations before us fought and diєd to give us. They gave us a Europe in which peace, freedom, democracy and prosperity feel so normal that we have somehow forgotten how historically abnormal they actually are.

We should cherish that privilege, not take it for granted. Freedom and peace must never be treated as givens, nor should we deny them or take them away from others, lest we become unworthy of them ourselves.

Nobody wants peace more than those who have actually seen war. But wanting peace and making yourself defenseless are two entirely different things.

You don’t preserve peace by making yourself incapable of defending it, you don’t preserve peace by denying someone under attack the means to defend theirs, and you certainly don’t preserve peace by teaching aggressors that aggression works.

Disarming yourself doesn’t make you peaceful. It makes you 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐌𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒.

Those who want peace should prepare for war.
