Belgium promises to deliver the planes by the end of 2028.
Belgium declared the transfer of 30 F-16 aircraft to Ukraine , but the delivery schedules are long-term, and this is unacceptable for Ukraine. Deputy Head of the Office of the President Ihor Zhovkva said this on Radio Svoboda on July 12.
“We really need the number of planes that the president talked about. We have the corresponding declarations from our partners regarding the number of planes. We know these four countries and we know the number they promise. Unfortunately, in some countries the delivery schedule is quite long. For example, “Belgium has declared 30 aircraft, and this is in our security agreement with Belgium. But it says that these 30 aircraft will be delivered by the end of 2028, which is obviously unacceptable to us,” Zhovkva said.
In addition, he noted that an important issue is the increase in the number of training centers for pilots.
“These aircraft have to be flown by someone. These pilots have to conduct combat tactics according to the type of aircraft they will operate on. The F-16 is a completely different combat tactic. That is why we talk about this, and in the corresponding statement about the F-16, which was drawn up during the summit, it is said that the partners will work on expanding the number of seats for Ukrainian pilots,” Zhovkva noted.
He added that this applies not only to pilots, the engineering staff is also important, as well as optimization, i.e. reducing training time.
“During the war, we cannot afford to go through this long period of training, as prescribed, perhaps, in the textbooks. We can optimize it,” Zhovkva said.
F-16 fighters for Ukraine
According to the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, F-16 fighter jets will appear in Ukrainian skies this summer.
At the same time, Bloomberg, citing its sources, wrote that Ukraine expects to receive six F-16s this summer and up to 20 by the end of the year.
It was noted that the process of sending F-16s to Ukraine was complicated by problems with spare parts and a language barrier between Ukrainian pilots and their foreign instructors. Allies are also concerned that Ukraine does not have enough airstrips, and those that do exist are vulnerable to Russian attacks.
