Russia is actively recruiting Nepalese citizens for the war against Ukraine . People who earn a salary of $150-200 per month at home are easily lured by promises of “work” in the Russian Federation with a salary 10-15 times higher.
Nepalese are lured with offers to work “in a warehouse or in security,” and then persuaded to sign a contract and thrown to the front. A new “portion” of lists of recruited Nepalese citizens was published in the “I Want to Live” project.
The project noted that the remote mountainous country of Nepal has become one of the largest suppliers of mercenaries for the Russian army.
“The country is quite poor – the salary of local residents fluctuates around $150-200 per month. This is taken advantage of by Russian recruiters, who promise their victims monthly payments 10-15 times higher than they receive at home. The Russians act according to a standard scheme: they promise high pay for “work in a warehouse or in security”, persuade them to sign a contract and send the recruit to a combat unit,” the report states.
Once in the Russian army, foreign mercenaries fully experience on their own skin both the “traditions” of the Russian Armed Forces, which consist in disregard for human life and dignity, and the real attitude of modern “denazifiers” towards all those who, due to skin color, religious beliefs, or traditions, cannot be classified as “Russians.”

Ukraine knows for sure about at least 801 Nepalese mercenaries who fought or are fighting against Ukraine. At least 31 of them have died, but the real number is likely much higher. Another 10 Nepalese are in Ukrainian captivity.
“There have been no official requests from Russia about their desire to return them in exchange,” Hochu Zhit clarified.
It is also no secret to the Nepalese authorities that Russia is actively and cynically recruiting Nepalese into assault units – and they are opposing this.
“Back in December 2023, the Nepalese Foreign Ministry called on Russia to stop recruiting its citizens, return the bodies of the six Nepalese killed in Ukraine, and pay compensation to their families. Needless to say, none of this was done, since Russia understands only the language of force? As a result, since January 2024, Nepal has stopped issuing work permits in Russia – it was with these documents that recruitment had previously taken place. In 2024, 22 people suspected of working for the Russian recruitment network were detained in Nepal,” the project said.

Also, “I Want to Live” traditionally appealed to the Russian occupiers, who are ready to surrender so as not to die in senseless, bloody Russian assaults.

We will remind, in early May, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that mercenaries from Nepal are deserting en masse from the Russian army. The reason is the huge losses in “meat assaults” and the cruel treatment of field commanders. The occupiers are unsuccessfully searching for fugitives in the captured territories of Luhansk region, and it is difficult for the deserters themselves to return home on their own, besides, they fear that they will be punished at home for participating in military operations against Ukraine.
