If he wins the election, Donald Trump will use sanctions against other countries, including Russia, “as little as possible.” The candidate for the presidency of the United States stated this while speaking at the Economic Club of New York.
Trump noted that during his first term as president, he resorted to sanctions against other countries, but tried to remove them as soon as possible because sanctions “kill your dollar” and “kill everything the dollar represents.” In his opinion, it is very important to preserve the status of the “world currency” behind the dollar.
“If we lost the dollar as a world currency, I think it would be equivalent to losing a war, which would make us a third world country. (…) Because look, you lose Iran, you lose Russia, China is trying to make its currency dominant. There are so many conflicts with all these countries that you will lose the dominance of the dollar. So I want to use sanctions as little as possible,” Trump said.
According to the ex-president, during his tenure, he used sanctions exclusively against countries “that deserve it.” He wants to continue this policy.
