Barack Obama also came to the defense of Angela Merkel, who, as chancellor of Germany, actively cooperated with Russia.

Former US President Barack Obama gave his assessment of the events of 2014, when Russia annexed the Ukrainian Crimea and thus flagrantly violated international law.

The 44th President of the United States in an interview with  CNN  noted that Ukraine in 2014 “was not the Ukraine we are talking about today.”

“There is a reason why there was no armed invasion of Crimea. Because there were many Russian-speaking people in Crimea, and there was a certain sympathy for the views that Russia represented. It was more difficult for Ukraine,” Obama said.

Obama also came to the defense of Angela Merkel, who, as chancellor of Germany, actively cooperated with Russia.

“Both me and Merkel, to whom I have great respect, had to involve many other Europeans who were then in a panic to impose sanctions and prevent Putin from continuing his invasion of the Donbass and the rest of Ukraine. Given the stage at which it was then “Ukraine and what were the moods in Europe, we held the lines. And then there was a feeling of Ukrainian identity, separate from Russia, and Ukraine’s determination to expel the occupiers,” Barak added.

Annexation of Crimea by Russia

In the spring of 2014, Russian troops invaded the territory of Crimea and held an illegal referendum there on March 16.

The self-proclaimed Crimean authorities said that 96.77% of the referendum participants were in favor of annexing Crimea to the Russian Federation.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine officially announced the beginning of the temporary occupation of Crimea on February 20, 2014. At that time, Western countries imposed sanctions against the Russian Federation and refused to recognize the peninsula as Russian.

    • What a croc. Even Biden was wanting to send javelins back then but obummer refused. U.S. did get a lot of small arms and other goodies from back alleys and like minded American lovers of Ukraine. Unfortunately leaders of the time threw Ukraine under the bus stripping down the equipment and capabilities that Ukraine is now having to resurrect or reacquire and blocking her path into NATO. Response was woefully inadequate then as well as years prior setting the stage for the continued genocide of any whom resist rooski-mir set in motion by putler and his rashist horde.

  1. The free will of the crimean people will shine once all ruSSian invaders left and any form of oppression ended.

  2. Well it is now is complete. Obama has moved from being a general moron to a fuckin idiot.

  3. The worse president in history. At least until Trumpkov.
At least Bill Clinton had the grace to show his deep regret about the catastrophe he caused with the Budapest Memorandum.
Now Obama has proved himself to be actual dogshit by making pro-putler speeches at a time like this. Unbefuckinglievable.

    • Where is he giving “pro-putler speeches”? Certainly not in the interview linked above.

      • “There is a reason why there was no armed invasion of Crimea. Because there were many Russian-speaking people in Crimea, and there was a certain sympathy for the views that Russia represented. It was more difficult for Ukraine,” Obama said.”

That’s pure putlerite shit. Even sounds like Trump. Plus he was keen to defend the interests of long established Russian agent Merkel.

        • In 2014, there was an invasion by the “little green men”. There wasn’t a major armed attack like in 2022.

Is it not true that there were many Russian-speakers in Crimea? Is it not true that some of them viewed Russia favorably? (Not so much now, after all the war crimes…)

Stating that doesn’t mean that Obama is pro-putler. In fact, the chyron on the screen shot above says:
Obama: Ukraine is “vital” in fight for democracy

“Even sounds like Trump.” – No; Trump talks about Russian-speaking areas in the context of “making a deal” with Russia, hinting at trading Ukrainian land to Russia as part of a peace deal. Obama is suggesting no such thing.

          • As already stated, Obama’s words were almost identical to those of Trump. That makes Obama just another putler shitstain.
            “Russian-speakers” does NOT denote “pro-Russia.”
Here is what Trumpkov said in 2014:

“But, you know, the people of Crimea, from what I’ve heard, would rather be with Russia than where they were. And you have to look at that also.”

The far left and far right sing from the same hymn sheet on putler.

The fact that Obama came out with this offensive bullshit at such a critical time proves that he really is a fucking arsehole.

  4. This is the same scrotumless coward that sent blankets and broken Humvees to Ukraine as a response to mafia land’s blatant crimes. What he’s got to say is completely irrelevant. He is a disgrace, and he has no honor and no dignity.

    • And then he had the nerve to try to solve the Russian invasion by “offering Putin an offramp.” Absolutely clueless and out of touch. Obama and corrupt Joe both helped Russia take Crimea and the Donbas and both have blood on their hands. Shameful un-American pussies.

      • They also single-handedly helped to destroy any future non-proliferation attempts by showing the world just how worthless the Budapest Memorandum really was.
