A satellite communications system similar to the American Starlink (a project created by Elon Musk’s SpaceX) is being developed in Ukraine. It is unknown at what stage the work is.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Sunday, October 4, while talking to reporters that a Ukrainian analogue of Starlink is already under development. He did not disclose details.
“There are developments. We are working on a similar Starlink,” the head of state said.
SpaceX is currently prohibiting Ukrainian military personnel from using Starlink satellite internet capabilities during strikes deep into Russia. Zelensky noted that it would be fair to grant Ukraine such access.
“Why is it fair? Because we know that some states will share relevant technologies with Russia at the end of this year, early next year,” he explained.
At the same time, the president thanked for the available technologies. “We gave appropriate signals, why do we need to continue this program, because the Chinese will share it with Russia,” Zelensky added.
What preceded
On October 3, in an interview with the Financial Times, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Russian Federation had accelerated work on its own satellite network “Rassvet” with the support of the PRC.
He also reported that he had several times raised the issue of imposing American sanctions against organizations involved in the creation of “Rassvet”.
As OBOZ.UA reported, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev threatened the United States with a “full-fledged space war” over this request by the Ukrainian president. He said that if the Russian satellite system is blocked, the American Starlink satellites will become “targets in return.”
