On May 19, 2024, Russians twice struck the recreation base in the village of Chervona Lozova in the Kharkiv region with Iskander missiles. It was a Sunday, and there were ordinary people at the base. Twenty-eight people were injured, and seven were killed. Among them was a young woman, seven months pregnant, Anzhelika Taran.

We met her family at the cemetery the day after the burial. They wanted to talk to us and gave permission for filming and publication of these photos: they want their grief to be known. They want the world to see that each number in this war represents real faces, not statistics.

Anzhelika was only 26. That day she went to the recreation base in Chervona Lozova, a few kilometers from Kharkiv. There were never any military personnel or equipment there. This place was a favorite spot for locals to relax. First, there was one explosion, and a little later, another. These people had almost no chance.

In the Ukrainian language, and perhaps in all the languages of the world, there are no words to convey what it is like to lose your daughter and unborn grandson in one day. This is not a tragedy; it is much more. Russia has destroyed these people’s lives. Is it possible to come to terms with it, is it possible to move on when on one sunny spring day you lose everything?

This happened on May 19. Yesterday, four days later, there was another mass killing. And daily explosions, daily alarms, daily injuries. The world is watching. It seems to support, it seems to pass resolutions, it seems that new airplanes are coming soon, almost every day there are optimistic loud statements. But no one will bring back this young woman and her unborn child. Nor the six others who died that day. Nor the seven who died yesterday. Nor the dozens of deaths at the front every day, though just yesterday these were ordinary civilian boys and girls who took up arms because there was no other way out. Because otherwise, their home would turn into Mariupol, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Maryinka, Orikhiv, Hulyaipole, Vovchansk, the list goes on and on.

The world is watching. Will it withstand the gaze of those who have lost everything?
