New details have emerged about the attack on Putin’s residence.

Unknown drones attacked the Kremlin in May, causing a temporary fire on the roof of the compound that houses President Vladimir Putin’s official residence.

The Washington Post quoted anonymous Ukrainian and Western officials, intelligence and security officials as saying that the operation was carried out by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence.

The article states that in 2023, Ukrainian intelligence agencies increasingly turned their attention to targets not only on the front line, but also deep inside the territory of the Russian Federation.

“The GUR used its own fleet of drones to launch dozens of attacks inside Russia, including strikes in which drones overcame Russian air defences and struck buildings in Moscow. In one operation in May 2023, part of the roof of the Kremlin was briefly set on fire,” the article said.

Some of these attacks were carried out by long-range drones launched from Ukraine, officials said on condition of anonymity. Other attacks were organised by agents and partisans inside Russia.

According to a WP spokesperson, some of the engines for these drones were purchased privately from suppliers in China, making it difficult to trace the source of supply to Ukraine.
