The Ukrainian military already has experience operating Humvee SUVs.

As part of  a $425 million military aid package from the United States,  Ukraine will receive 2,000 HMMWV (Humvee) military off-road vehicles. This equipment has a wide range of applications,  Forbes reports .

The military aid package was announced by the US State Department on October 16, 2024. It will include ammunition and missiles, but the most interesting is the 2,000 Humvees, which is a very large delivery of such equipment.

Humvee SUVs will help fill gaps in Ukraine’s positions on the front. In addition, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be able to advance more effectively toward the positions of Russian occupiers, the publication emphasizes.

Once Ukraine receives a new batch of Humvees, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be able to quickly integrate the vehicles into their formations. The vehicles look like civilian cars, eliminating the need for extensive training before being sent to the front. Moreover, the Ukrainian military is already familiar with the Humvee, as Ukraine has more than 3,000 of them in service.

In addition, the publication stated that Humvees fit perfectly into Ukraine’s current defensive strategy. They can be used on defensive lines that are integrated near Kharkov, Chasovy Yar and Svatove.

In urban conditions, tanks and artillery are less effective than more compact and maneuverable SUVs. As a result, Russian troops will have to engage in brutal foot combat, the publication said.

Another advantage of the Humvee is that the Ukrainian military can use the SUVs to transport heavy weapons. Machine guns and other weapons can be mounted on them.

The publication recalled that the Ukrainian military uses modified Humvees for other tasks as well. Some Ukrainian units have transformed the SUVs into mobile service platforms, which makes it possible to repair armored vehicles on the move in field conditions.

In addition, the Ukrainian military used Humvees as mobile air defense platforms. For this purpose, anti-aircraft guns and anti-drone systems were installed on the SUVs.

The publication noted that Ukraine needs a large number of ground vehicles. In October alone, the Ukrainian Armed Forces lost more than 220 units of such equipment and almost 2,000 units since the beginning of 2024.

The US can meet Ukraine’s demand for ground vehicles thanks to its huge stockpiles of such equipment. The publication shared that the US has 60,000 Humvee SUVs, which are gradually being replaced by the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle.

All of these Humvees were still operational and serviced until recently, the publication said. The main advantage is that these vehicles are being phased out and are significantly cheaper than more modern combat systems.
