This item has now been removed from the plan, the president said.

The US plan to end the war in Ukraine included a clause on compensation for Washington for providing security guarantees to Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said during a conversation with journalists.

“It was stated here: the US will receive compensation for security guarantees. We simply do not understand what this means, and we are raising this issue. Now it has been crossed out,” Zelensky said.

At the same time, he reported that according to the updated plan, Ukraine should receive security guarantees from the US, NATO, and European signatory states, which will reflect Article 5. In particular, this plan includes the following sub-points:

  • If Russia invades Ukraine, in addition to a coordinated military response, all global sanctions against Russia will be reinstated.
  • If Ukraine invades Russia or opens fire on Russian territory without provocation, the security guarantees will be considered invalid. If Russia opens fire on Ukraine, the security guarantees will come into effect.

Also, according to the president, this agreement does not exclude bilateral security guarantees for Ukraine with other countries.

“This is about the possibilities of our bilateral agreements with 30 countries, we want such possibilities to remain with us. These are the countries of the Coalition of the Willing – 30 countries, including Europe, Canada, and Japan, which are ready in one form or another to be with us in guaranteeing security,” the president explained.

  1. I’m now more convinced then ever the so called guarantee is pure hog wash. “If Ukraine invades Russia or opens fire on Russian territory without provocation, the security guarantees will be considered invalid…”. So some russian says Ukraine fired on them, the guarantee is invalid? Anyone care to take bets how long this guarantee will be in effect?

    • Also, Russian territory as per the internationally recognized borders of 1992? Or Ukrainian territory that ruSSia wants to claim as their own?
