Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova clarified that the Senate supported the proposal of Democratic leader Charles Schumer to end the debate on the substance of the bill on the US international assistance package, which includes Ukraine.

“The resolution was supported by 80 senators (60 required) and 19 voted against. This resolution begins a 30-hour speaking period for senators, in which one senator can speak for up to 1 hour. The actual length of the filibuster will depend on the number of senators who will participate in it “This will open the door to a final vote on the bill,” she emphasized.

Please note that the Senate requires a minimum of 50 votes to approve the bill.

Consideration of assistance to Ukraine in the Senate: what preceded it

As you know, on April 23, the US Senate is scheduled to consider a bill on financial and military assistance to Ukraine.

However, a few hours ago it became known that the Senate had postponed voting on the foreign support package. The reason was the Republicans’ dissatisfaction with the fact that they could not propose their own amendments to these documents.

Subsequently, the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Oksana Markarova stated that the Senate rejected the proposal of Senators B. Sanders (independent) and M. Lee (Republican) to stop considering the proposal of Democratic leader Charles Schumer to close the bill on the US international assistance package for amendments.

“The decision was supported by 48 senators, 50 senators voted against. If successful, the procedure for considering an international aid package could take a significant amount of time, given the need to discuss and vote for all the individual amendments of senators. Immediately after the voting was completed, Democratic Leader Charles Schumer made a proposal about ending the debate on the substance of the bill,” Markarova said.

  1. Ok, so Schumer tried to prevent further delays. Rightly so! Still, after the blockade in the House for 6 months, another 30 hours for debate at least isn’t excessive. Could be worse. 😕
