These are positions responsible for overseeing and planning the Alliance’s military and intelligence operations.
The United States intends to reduce the number of personnel at several key NATO command centers, Reuters reports , citing three informed sources.
It is noted that such a move could increase concerns in Europe regarding Washington’s commitment to the Alliance.

“As part of this move, which the Trump administration has communicated to some European capitals, the United States will eliminate about 200 positions in NATO structures that are involved in overseeing and planning the Alliance’s military and intelligence operations,” informed sources said on condition of anonymity.
Among the structures to be cut are the NATO Intelligence Fusion Centre (based in the UK), Allied Special Operations Command (based in Brussels, Belgium), NATO Maritime Strike and Support Force STRIKFORNATO (based in Portugal), and several similar structures.
The sources did not provide specifics on why the US decided to reduce the number of personnel in NATO bodies, but the actions are consistent with the Trump administration’s stated intention to reallocate more resources to the Western Hemisphere.
However, these changes are minor given the size of the US military forces stationed in Europe. And they do not necessarily signal a broader US withdrawal from the European continent. There are approximately 80,000 US military personnel stationed in Europe, nearly half of whom are in Germany.
