It is a highly mobile and easy to deploy aerial threat detection system.

The United States has ordered new Giraffe 1X anti-drone radars from Swedish defense giant Saab for $48 million.

According to the military portal Defense Express , the contract is aimed at combating unknown and Russian UAVs, which have recently been actively threatening NATO bases.

According to the publication, the agreement was signed in the third quarter of 2025, or July-September, with deliveries to begin in 2026.

“This is a fairly rapid response to new threats… The contract is aimed at supporting partners in the security sector. Therefore, it is highly likely that, once received, the radars will be deployed to protect NATO countries,” analysts suggested.Read also:

The Giraffe 1X is a radar operating in the IEEE X-band (NATO I-band) and has a range of up to 75 km. Its key features are its compact size and light weight, less than 300 kg, allowing for installation on small vehicles or vessels.

In other words, as Defense Express writes, it’s a highly mobile and easy-to-deploy asset for detecting aerial threats. UAVs are often singled out among the latter, but it also has the capability to operate a counter-battery radar to track mortar and artillery rounds.

“The Swedes have taken full advantage of these advantages, using the Giraffe 1X as part of various air defense systems, such as the fully-fledged MSHORAD air defense system based on the RBS 70 NG. They also have the Loke, a “shaheed-killer” system developed in just four months.

There’s no information yet about the US ordering anything other than just a detection radar. However, it’s highly likely that integration with some kind of counter-drone system could occur in the future,” the article states.
