The United States was not happy: Foreign Affairs found out why the peace treaty with the Russian Federation fell through in 2022

Although the final decision was Kyiv’s, Washington’s position also played a role.

Ukraine did not consult with the United States before reaching a preliminary agreement on a peace deal with Russia in the spring of 2022. The Americans did not like that the draft peace agreement included certain US obligations to which they did not consent. Foreign Affairs writes about this with reference to an unnamed former American official.

“The agreement would create new legal obligations for the United States, in particular the obligation to go to war with Russia if it invades Ukraine again. This condition alone would make the agreement unacceptable to Washington,” the newspaper writes.

According to the mentioned ex-official, in such conditions the West not only did not approve of the Russian-Ukrainian agreements, but took the path of increasing military assistance to Kyiv and increased sanctions pressure on Russia.

Foreign Affairs notes that this should not be seen as if the West torpedoed the peace agreement, because there were many other factors – notably Russia’s final defeat in attempts to capture Kyiv, Kharkov, Chernigov and Sumy, which gave the Ukrainians hope of a possible military victory.

“True, offers of support [with arms supplies] from the West seem to have strengthened Zelensky’s resolve, and the lack of Western enthusiasm [for the draft peace agreement] seems to have weakened his interest in diplomacy,” the authors of the publication note.

So, what in the hell was the Budapest Memorandum for?
    To wipe asses with.

    • It’s been a clusterfuck since day one. The West have gone out of their way to make sure russia don’t lose this war. As soon as the jellyfish were talking about giving Ukraine just enough weapons to defend themselves, the writing was on the wall.

      • That’s one reason why I wish they would get a portion of what Ukraine gets each and every day to remind them of what war means.

        • That’s sort of what I mentioned to speaker Johnson when I wrote him, I said while his children are having sweet dreams in a safe, warm bed, Ukrainian children are thirsty, hungry, cold and scared. And for what? Because they are Ukrainian?
