The UN Secretary General calls on the authorities and the people of Belarus to engage in dialogue

The UN is monitoring the situation in Belarus, said the official representative of the Secretary General of the Organization Stefan Dujarric.

According to him, Secretary General Antonio Guterres “closely monitors developments in the country and emphasizes the importance of giving all Belarusians the opportunity to exercise their civil and political rights,” urging the authorities to exercise restraint in response to the demonstrations.

“We are well aware of the demonstrations and events taking place in this country. The Secretary-General believes that public discontent should be heard and that repression is not the answer,” Dujarric said, adding that the ill-treatment of detainees should be investigated.

He also noted that “the Secretary General calls on all Belarusians to resolve the problems that arose after the election through dialogue and to preserve peace in the country.”
