Ukrainian Defense Forces have advanced on the front line in the area of the city of Toretsk, Donetsk region, in recent days. At the same time, Russian troops have been pressuring Ukrainian positions in the Toretsk and Novopavlivske directions.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported on the situation on the front . Analysts refer to geolocation data and reports from both Ukrainian officers and Russian militarist bloggers.
Torets direction
It is noted that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have advanced in the northern part of Toretsk, as well as north of the city. According to analysts, this is evidenced by footage published on May 23 by Russian pro-war bloggers who “brag” about allegedly repelling Ukrainian attacks.
Russian military officials said their army had advanced to the western outskirts of Novospassky (west of Toretsk) and north of Novaya Poltavka (northwest of the city), and was “occupying most of Hnativka” southwest of Toretsk. Another propagandist claimed Russian troops were advancing in an area up to 3.4 km wide north and east of Romanivka (southwest of Toretsk). ISW does not confirm all of these Russian claims.
At the same time, it is noted that in the Toretsk direction on May 22 and 23, the Russian Armed Forces attacked Ukrainian positions near Toretsk itself, in the areas of Ozarynivka, Druzhba, Diliivka, Dachny, Krymske, Novospasske, Romanivka, Oleksandropol, Hnativka, Zora, Yablunivka, Novaya Poltavka, Rusyny Yar and Popovy Yar. The Ukrainian Defense Forces counterattacked the occupiers in the Poltavka – Popovy Yar area.
The deputy commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces mechanized battalion operating in the Torets direction reported that Russian troops are trying to cut off Ukrainian forces’ logistics using drone strikes. The invaders also continue to carry out infantry attacks using light vehicles, including motorcycles and buggies.
For his part, the commander of the Ukrainian battalion of unmanned systems added that Russian troops have concentrated a significant number of UAV units in the Torets direction, using various types of them, including fiber-optic drones.
Novopavlivskyi direction
According to ISW data, on May 22 and 23, the occupiers attacked the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine northeast of Novopavlivka, east and southeast of it: in the areas of Novopavlivka, Kotlyarivka, and Troitsky.
The “successes” of the Russian Armed Forces northeast and south of Novosergiyevka, claimed by propagandists, are not confirmed. At the same time, it is noted that Russian troops have recently advanced northeast of Troitsky (southeast of Novopavlivka).
A Ukrainian officer operating in the area said that fighting in the area is intensifying, but Russian forces are not using armored vehicles or motorcycles in their attacks. According to him, the occupiers are using motorbikes and civilian cars to transport infantry.
In addition, in the Novopavlovsk direction, on May 22-23, units of the Russian army attacked west of Kurakhovo: in the area of Konstantinopol, Andriyivka, Alekseyevka, Bagatyr, and Odrany.
Geolocation footage published on May 23, according to ISW, may indicate the capture of Odrane by the occupiers. Some propagandists attribute this “success” to units of the Russian 36th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade. Others stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces counterattacked the Russians in the area of Bhagatyr and Odrane.
As OBOZ.UA reported, today the Russian army is also conducting an active offensive in the Pokrovsky direction. The occupiers are trying to find gaps in the defense of Ukrainian fighters, going on assaults on foot or moving on motorcycles.
