Ukrainian drones attacked the Smolensk region on the evening of March 27, Governor Vasily Anokhin reported on his Telegram channel. According to him, air defense forces and aircraft shot down six drones, after which emergency response units were dispatched to the crash site. Early in the morning, the regional governor wrote that seven drones had been spotted overnight. “There were no casualties or damage,” he assured. The region’s defense industry, in particular, includes an aircraft plant in Smolensk (JSC Smolensk Aviation Plant (SmAZ)), which is part of the Tactical Missiles Corporation and which Medvedev likely visited. SmAZ is subject to US and Canadian sanctions “for its role in aiding or abetting Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine.” The European Union blacklisted the company for “producing Kh-59 missiles, which were used by the Russian Armed Forces during the aggressive war against Ukraine.” For the same reasons, the plant was also subject to sanctions from Ukraine, Japan, and Switzerland. The plant was previously hit by Ukrainian drone strikes in November 2023.
Among other things, the plant produces decoy drones, components for frontline aviation and missiles, and the missiles themselves, the X-59 and X-101, various types of light aircraft, X-101 missiles, and also carries out repair and maintenance of aircraft, according to Ukraine.
