Congress returns 9 April and will be in session until 22 April. Those are a perilous 13 days for Ukraine and the World- and the end result needs to be approval of the $61 billion aid package that will supply Ukraine well past the elections and the Inaugural.
And most importantly stave off defeat this spring and summer.
Speaker Johnson is now saying the House might approve but with some new innovations.
Either energy concessions, or southern border concessions, or making the aid a loan.
Any and all of these are complicated and time consuming.
And if they make changes to the Senate bill, it will have to go back to the Senate. More time consuming. And less time to accomplish the mission.
This is reminiscent of 5 Days in May 1940- May 24-28, 1940 when the British Parliament debated negotiating with Hitler or going to war. Those five days changed history.
The British chose to rescue their troops in Dunkirk to fight another day.
A week later the newly appointed PM Churchill gave his famous speech that galvanized the nation to fight on.
He laid out the facts of the difficult task ahead. And he concluded with:
“We shall not flag nor fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France and on the seas and oceans; we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be; we shall fight on beaches, landing grounds, in fields, in streets and on the hills. We shall never surrender and even if, which I do not for the moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, will carry on the struggle until in God’s good time the New World with all its power and might, sets forth to the liberation and rescue of the Old. “
This is the time for the U.S. to have our “fight them on the beaches speech” to galvanize the U.S. and finally say we will support Ukraine with whatever it takes to regain 1991 territorial sovereignty. America can do it!
