The upper house of the Swiss parliament rejected the allocation of financial aid to Ukraine in the amount of 5 billion Swiss francs (5.58 billion US dollars). The reason for this was that the plan violates the limits on borrowing in a neutral country, writes Reuters .
By 28 votes to 15, lawmakers rejected the $15 billion aid package, which also included 10.1 billion francs in additional funding for Switzerland’s armed forces.
“The plan’s defeat had been widely expected in recent weeks, with right-wing lawmakers particularly opposed. They argued the package violated Switzerland’s so-called “debt brake” and rejected it two weeks before the Swiss government was due to hold a high-level summit , aimed at helping to establish peace in Ukraine,” Reuters noted.
The journalists added that the package, which was supported by a separate parliamentary committee in April, was intended to be an “extraordinary contribution to the security of Switzerland” and “peace in Europe” due to the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine.
The publication reminded that the West demands Switzerland to do more to help Ukraine, despite the fact that right-wing nationalist MPs insist that the country only remain neutral. It is noted that such aid to Ukraine should be aimed at supporting the reconstruction and repair of the country’s everyday infrastructure.

Lots of Putin scum there. Imho the EU should rethink its partnership with that shady nation. A “neutral” stance is not compatible with the Union’s values anyway. The Swiss very much profits from the EU’s free market, but time and again tries to cherrypick the laws it should have to follow. That’s a bad deal for the community, better kick that country out! 😠

I am ashamed of what my country is becoming in the name of so-called neutrality.
If we can take inspiration from it and respect it, we must not forget terrible compromises that it has engendered (WW2, apartheid SA). Let’s be clear, it no longer corresponds at all to the types of international relations that the world has the right to expect from Switzerland. We want an à la carte Europe and the cozy security of our geographical location without participating. Unacceptable.
As a reminder, the far right has submit a referendum (vote by the population within 12 months) to lift and ban all sanctions against Russia and de facto against identical regimes in the name of the sacrosanct Swiss neutrality. Insane!
I don’t understand. Switzerland draws its foundation from the founding myths which describe the struggle of primitive communities against the Habsburg bailiffs. We should so identify with the Ukrainians’ fight!
