The contract with Rheinmetall was reportedly signed in 2011 and was scheduled for completion in 2014.

The Russian 333rd training center near the town of Mulino in the Nizhny Novgorod region, which was attacked by Ukrainian Lyuty drones on March 14 , was built in 2011 under a contract for 100 million euros by the German defense concern Rheinmetall, writes Defence Express.

“This is not just a training center, it is equipped with modern complexes with electronic training tools and has a large training ground for conducting mock battles. It is capable of training up to 700 servicemen at a time, and about 30 thousand servicemen a year can complete a full course of training,” the publication says.

It is indicated that the 333rd combat training center has a total area of more than 500 square kilometers. Several towns with imitation of urban and rural development have been built on the territory of the center’s training ground. As of 2015, the center had about 150 simulators for training on various types of equipment and weapons, from small arms to tanks.

It is noted that the contract with Rheinmetall was concluded in 2011 and provided for the completion of the work in 2014. According to the contract, the concern was to: design the center’s systems, develop and supply communications systems and a system for analyzing mock battles, build a complex of buildings, manufacture a system of laser battle simulators and conduct training for the center’s personnel. However, according to Russian sources, before the contract was terminated, the company managed to design all of the center’s systems, conduct training for some of the center’s personnel, help deploy the communications system, build a complex of buildings and manufacture, but not supply, laser battle simulator systems.

“Due to the introduction of sanctions, the opening of the center was postponed. In 2015, due to haste, a partial opening of the center took place, the other part was put into operation as construction progressed, because at that time it was still not completed. In 2022, the 3rd Army Corps was formed on the basis of the training ground specifically for the war in Ukraine,” the publication added.
