French media reported that Pavel Durov, the creator of the Telegram messenger, had been detained in France . Deputy Speaker of the Russian State Duma Vladislav Davankov said that he had sent an appeal to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov asking him to seek Durov’s release.

“Hardly anyone has done more than him to develop digital services in Russia and the world. Now he needs to be pulled out. I called on Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to call on the French authorities to release Pavel Durov from custody,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.

Ironically, a State Duma spokesman said that Durov’s arrest “may have political grounds and be a tool for gaining access to the personal information of Telegram users.”Video of the day

“This cannot be allowed. The media writes that law enforcement agencies consider Durov involved in “drug trafficking, crimes against children and fraud” due to “the lack of moderation and cooperation with law enforcement” at Telegram,” he added.

Davankov also noted that there are no “messengers in the world where such violations do not occur.” 

“But for some reason no one is arresting or jailing their owners. And this should not happen now. If the French authorities refuse to release Pavel Durov from custody, I propose making every effort to move him to the territory of the UAE or the Russian Federation. With his consent, of course,” he summed up.

Durov’s arrest in France: what is known

On the evening of August 24, TF1 reported that French intelligence services had detained the founder and CEO of the Telegram messenger Pavel Durov. It was noted that he was arrested at around 8:00 pm on Saturday evening when he stepped off his private jet onto the runway at Le Bourget Airport.

The Paris police prefecture has not yet confirmed the fact of Durov’s arrest.

Investigators from ONAF (the National Office for Combating Fraud at the Customs Department) notified him of suspicion and took him into custody. Durov is now due to appear before an investigating judge to face possible charges on Sunday for a range of crimes: complicity in terrorism, drugs, fraud, money laundering, paedo-criminal content, etc. He could face up to 20 years in prison.
