If the Russians are ‘Digging in’ for a serious defence of Kherson city they are making a huge mistake. While they retreat and evacuate civilians, they are creating advantages for Ukraine’s Generals.

Any RF troops left inside Kherson will eventually be cut off and surrounded. There will be no requirement for Ukraine to take the city to liberate people who are no longer there. Ukraine can seal off the city and force the surrender of whoever remains behind. Ukraine will control food, water and power systems.

If Russia is leaving troops behind, they will be a rear guard designed to slow UA forces down while they retreat over the river. The Dnipro River will shape the winter defence lines in Kherson.

However, in the east Russia is finding it hard to stop the steady advance of UA forces into Luhansk and Donetsk. This is where the autumn war will be fought, keeping the pressure on the demoralised Russian army.

While they wait out the cold months Russia’s economy will weaken further. Their soldiers will not be paid or fed. Eventually the pressure coming from all directions, will tell.
