The new US air defense base in northern Poland, designed to detect and intercept ballistic missiles, is ready for operation. This was announced in NATO, Reuters reports .
Speaking on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Washington, Alliance chief Jens Stoltenberg said the readiness of the base was an important step for transatlantic security in the face of the growing threat posed by ballistic missiles.
“As a defense alliance, we cannot ignore this threat. Anti-missile defense is an important element of NATO’s main task – collective defense,” he added.
Stoltenberg also noted that ballistic missiles are widely used in the Middle East and in the war in Ukraine.
The system, named Aegis Ashore, is based in the northern Polish city of Redzikovo.
The Union anti-missile shield is designed to protect the citizens, territory and armed forces of Europe from ballistic missile attacks.
Other key elements of the shield include a second Aegis Ashore facility in Romania, US Navy destroyers based in the Spanish port of Rota, and an early warning radar located in the Turkish city of Kurecik.
NATO claims that Aegis Ashore is purely defensive in nature. About 200 servicemen are stationed at two interceptor bases in Poland and Romania, and the base in the Romanian city of Deveselu has been operating since 2016.
