European leaders have changed their tactics with US President Donald Trump , using flattery and pressure to build momentum for new sanctions against Russia.

The New York Times (NYT), citing two European officials familiar with the situation, reported that in their conversations with Trump, these leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, praised him for striking Iran’s nuclear facilities. At the same time, they told Trump that he could do something similar in Ukraine, but not with bombs, but with a new package of sanctions aimed at undermining the Russian economy.

The publication noted that these appeals were the latest step in attempts to get Trump to deal a devastating blow to the Russian economy for its attack on Ukraine.

“It seems the president has finally bought into the idea,” the publication wrote.

NYT, citing sources, notes that Merz, as well as the leaders of France, Great Britain and Italy, told Trump that new US sanctions could force Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to begin serious negotiations to end the war.

The new approach of European leaders has exhausted Trump’s patience with Putin. And after several months of phone calls between them, hopes that Trump could achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine have run out.

The publication reminded about the bill by Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, which provides for new measures to influence Russia. It has 83 supporters in the Senate.

Some analysts suggest that the bill, if approved, could deal a much greater blow than any previous anti-Russian sanctions.

“The economic implications of the bill are clear and far-reaching,” said Ben Harris, vice president and director of the Brookings Institution’s Economic Research Program.

“There are only three likely outcomes: a retreat of Russian troops, a collapse in global energy markets, or a global recession. There are no other outcomes. Therefore, the bill should be considered both bold and risky,” Harris said.

However, other analysts warn that it will take time for the sanctions in the bill to hit Russia hard enough to force Putin to negotiate, and that Trump may not implement many of them.

Janis Kluge, a Russian expert at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, believes that most sanctions against Russia are “unrealistic and will never be implemented.”

“The main achievement of the bill is to keep the conversation going about new sanctions against Russia, which is an important goal in itself. However, it will not change the course of the war, and European leaders should not place too much hope on it,” Kluge stated.

US sanctions against Russia

The US Senate has responded by saying when it will pass a bill on sanctions against Russia. Senate Majority Leader John Thune hopes that the bill can be introduced for consideration by the end of July.

This confidence came after US President Donald Trump criticized Russian dictator Vladimir Putin for recent strikes on Ukrainian cities.

    • Red I give you much credit for your continued optimism. Unfortunately, I’ve seen too many media BS that I look at such news with a degree of cynicism. I’m glad someone is optimistic.

  1. New approach on my ass! Putler pissed Trump off and humiliated him when bombing the crap out of Ukraine only hours after their last phone call! Trump won’t listen to anybody, period. Anyway, hopefully he finally realized what lying criminal gang resides in the Craplin!
