In July, according to the Moscow Department of Health, 17,237 people died in the city – 6,464 more than in July 2020. Covid was the main or co-cause of death in 6583 cases.

The Moscow Department of Healthcare associates the increase in mortality “with the spread of a new strain of coronavirus and abnormally hot weather.” The heat, the report says, negatively affected the severity of the coronavirus disease and led to an exacerbation of diseases of the cardiovascular system.

In Moscow, the increase in the incidence of coronavirus began in early June. In the city, restrictions were introduced, including access to catering establishments using QR codes, and mandatory remote work for 30% of employees. QR codes were canceled in mid-July, and the remote work requirement was canceled on August 13.

Rosstat previously published data on mortality in Russia in June. According to this department, in June in Moscow, the maximum increase in mortality since the beginning of the pandemic was recorded – then 16 406 people died, 7138 more than in the pre-pandemic June 2019.
