In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera , he also stated that he opposed the demolition of the monument to Catherine.
“I think it is important to behave politically, the lives of millions of people are at stake. I do not want to be misunderstood. Obviously, I dream of returning to our borders in 1991, but it is necessary to negotiate step by step, gradually seek compromises, avoid confrontation “, – said Trukhanov.
The mayor of Odessa noted that the petition for the demolition of the monument to Catherine has already collected 25,000 signatures. But he is in no hurry to satisfy the desire of the Ukrainians.
“I am against the demolition of statues. Even if we destroy monuments, history does not change. I know that the petition has collected 25,000 signatures, but I’m waiting. According to this logic, should I also remove the monument to Pushkin or Gagarin? It does not make sense,” Trukhanov said.
