The loss ratio of the russian army is increasing: the main reasons are named

01/26/2026

The nature of the losses of the Russian occupation army in the war against Ukraine has changed. Instead of the standard ratio of killed and wounded of 1:3, the enemy now loses approximately 12:10, that is, for every 12 “two hundredths” there are 10 “three hundredths”.

These figures were published by the publication Texty.org.ua based on statistical data. The journalists explained that the ratio of killed and wounded is one of the key factors in a war of attrition. It shows which part of the military will be able to return to the battlefield and which will have to be replaced.

The share of Russian deaths increased to 56%

The traditional ratio is 1:3 (one killed to three wounded). The figure is conditional and is based on averages from World War II. Most modern wars are characterized by a significantly higher survival rate. For example, in Afghanistan, this figure was 1:10 among US soldiers (and even 1:13 in the case of Marines).

The distribution of losses in the Russian-Ukrainian war was usually assessed through the prism of a ratio of 1:3. However, significant transformations have occurred in the last two years.

The situation began to change in the late spring of 2024: the proportion of killed Russian invaders was rapidly increasing.

By the end of 2025, the share of dead was already 56% of total Russian losses. The ratio had shifted to approximately 12 killed for every 10 wounded.

Reasons for transformations – changing nature of hostilities and tactics of Russian occupiers

If earlier the damage was inflicted mainly by artillery fire, now drones are used against the enemy in most cases. They are usually aimed at a specific group of manpower, the detonation occurs at a minimum distance, so the strikes more often lead to fatal consequences than to injuries.

Another point is that the large concentration of strike and reconnaissance assets complicates evacuation. Movement in open terrain is quickly detected, so evacuation teams, along with the wounded, are often fired upon.

The Russians themselves have contributed to changing the situation: they are using infiltration tactics, during which there is usually no possibility of evacuating the wounded. The limited enemy groups that infiltrate forward are deprived of reliable logistics.

At the same time, the aggressor state is gradually depleting Soviet reserves of armored vehicles, and the pace of production and restoration does not fully compensate for the losses. Russian troops are forced to use less protected vehicles more often, which increases the risks for personnel.

As a result, during peak periods in 2025, the Russian Armed Forces lost about 21,000 servicemen killed per month. The actual irretrievable losses may be even higher, because to this figure must be added the number of seriously wounded who cannot return to the battlefield due to health conditions.

So far, the Russian mobilization system can compensate for this level of losses: the average monthly pace of Russian mobilization in 2025 was estimated at 35 thousand people. However, large irreversible losses clearly weaken the enemy.

“The increase in the share of those killed has prevented the Russian Federation from increasing the size of its group in the last six months. Before that, the number of Russian forces in Ukraine had been constantly growing. This means that Russia will not be able to continue to increase pressure on the front without increasing mobilization measures or significantly reducing losses,” the authors of the article concluded.

As OBOZ.UA wrote:

– President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that during December 2025, the Russian occupation army lost 35,000 soldiers in Ukraine. The statistics for the month are indicative: they are twice as many as the losses of Soviet troops during the 10-year war in Afghanistan.

– Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov said that the strategic goal of the JOU is to increase the losses of Russian occupation troops to 50 thousand people per month.

  1. At the bottom of every WP article is a link to what the WP system identifies as “related.”

Often there is a link to pure kremkrapp. In fact WP is crawling with it. This one reads like a handbook of kremtroll talking points. Hardly anything is left out :
