The package will cover 4 sanction areas and include more than 130 individual sanctions.

The new package of sanctions that the European Union plans to impose against Russia will be “the most extensive in history” as it will cover four sanction regimes at once. According to a senior EU official, the package will be announced on May 20 at a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, writes DW .

It is noted that restrictive measures will be introduced against the Russian Federation within the framework of four sanction regimes: for the war in Ukraine, for human rights violations, for hybrid warfare, and for the use of chemical weapons.

In total, more than 130 separate sanctions will be adopted, including against the Russian military-industrial complex, the “shadow fleet” and its auxiliaries, suppliers of sanctioned goods to Russia from third countries, as well as disseminators of propaganda and disinformation.

As reported by the representative of the European Commission, within the framework of the 17th package of sanctions for Russian aggression in Ukraine, 75 new legal entities and individuals, as well as 200 vessels of the “shadow fleet”, will be added to the sanctions lists. As a result, the number of persons on this EU sanctions list will exceed 2,500, and vessels – 300.

The EU’s sanctions regime for hybrid activities will introduce sectoral measures, as well as individual sanctions against 27 individuals and legal entities in the Russian Federation.

As part of the European Union’s global sanctions regime for human rights violations, 28 more individuals and legal entities from Russia will be added to the sanctions lists.

In addition, the EU official announced the planned application of sanctions against Russia for the use of chemical weapons . According to her, this refers to chemical means of suppressing mass riots, which are used by the Russian side as a means of waging war in Ukraine.

Sanctions against Russia

As UNIAN previously reported, on Wednesday, May 14, EU ambassadors gave the “green light” to the 17th package of sanctions against Russia. And on May 16, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Union is working on new large-scale sanctions against the Russian Federation .

In particular, she proposed imposing sanctions against the Nord Stream gas pipeline connecting Russia with Europe, the Russian banking sector and the shadow fleet that Moscow uses to circumvent oil sanctions. The head of the European Commission also announced plans to lower the oil price limit set at the G7 level.
