During his conversation with US President Donald Trump today , Russian dictator Vladimir Putin attempted to portray Ukraine as a terrorist, against whose actions Russia is simply defending itself. This follows from a statement by Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, reported by Russian media .
According to Ushakov, the conversation was initiated by the Russian side and lasted approximately two and a half hours. He confirmed Trump’s statement that Putin began the conversation with fawning praise for Trump’s agreement with Hamas. However, according to Ushakov, the interlocutors focused primarily on the “Ukrainian crisis.”
“Putin provided a detailed assessment of the current situation, emphasizing Russia’s interest in achieving a peaceful political and diplomatic solution. It was noted that Russian troops retain full strategic initiative along the entire line of contact,” Putin’s spokesman stated.
According to Ushakov, Putin complained to Trump that “the Kyiv regime is resorting to terrorist methods”—strikes on “civilian targets and energy infrastructure,” to which the Russians “are forced to respond accordingly.” However, he did not specify whether Russian strikes on Ukrainian residential buildings and power plants were considered “terrorist” or not.
Ushakov acknowledged that in his conversation with Putin, Trump “repeatedly emphasized the need for the rapid establishment of peace” in Ukraine.
“The issue of possible supplies of long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine was also raised,” Ushakov said. According to him, Putin tried to convince Trump that these missiles would not change the situation on the battlefield, but that supplying them to Ukraine would worsen relations between Moscow and Washington and hinder a peace settlement.
The Kremlin spokesman also confirmed that the two sides agreed to immediately begin preparations for a new in-person meeting, which could take place in Budapest.
