The Kremlin has abandoned hopes of launching a new gas pipeline to China by the end of the decade.

Despite the triumphant reports from Vladimir Putin and Gazprom, Russian authorities do not expect the launch of the new Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline to China in the coming years, according to a draft government macroeconomic forecast published by Bloomberg .

Sources familiar with the document told Bloomberg that Russia will not be able to significantly increase gas supplies to China until at least the end of the decade.

Last year, Gazprom pumped 38.8 billion cubic meters to the Chinese market—almost half of its exports, which fell to their lowest level since the late 1980s after the war. According to the forecast, by 2029, Gazprom’s supplies to China will increase to 52.4 billion cubic meters—an increase of 13.6 billion cubic meters.

The capacity of Power of Siberia 2 is 50 billion cubic meters, and after its launch, exports to China should grow to 100 billion cubic meters, Putin said last year during his visit to Beijing. According to the forecast, already approved and ongoing projects will ensure increased exports to China:   a Far Eastern route with a capacity of 10 billion cubic meters per year is expected to begin operations in 2027. Gazprom has also agreed to additional supplies via the Power of Siberia-1 pipeline, which was launched 10 years ago.

Last September, Putin announced that, after more than a decade of negotiations with Beijing, an agreement had finally been reached on the second line of the Power of Siberia pipeline. “The negotiating parties have finally reached a consensus. New markets are emerging and expanding,” Putin boasted after a meeting with Xi Jinping. The Russian president’s statements, however, were not confirmed by Xi, Chinese media, or CNPC, a buyer of Gazprom’s gas.

Putin and Xi have failed to agree on the most important issue—the gas price, sources previously told Reuters. China proposed lowering it to the domestic Russian level of approximately $60 per thousand cubic meters, a quarter of the current price, which already includes a 40 percent discount ($258 per thousand cubic meters).

According to Reuters, agreements on the project’s investment terms and the start date for gas pumping were also unsuccessful. Gazprom does not expect Power of Siberia 2 to reach its planned volumes before 2034-35, if deliveries begin in 2031, the agency’s sources said.

  1. Mafia land lacks the money and the technology for such a project. By the time it does get going, it’ll be irrelevant. Bat virus land’s renewable energy growth is among the strongest in the world.

    • “The Russian president’s statements, however, were not confirmed by Xi”

Once again we have the case when little putler was spouting lies to keep power in his own asylum while reality was something completely different. Its amazing to imagine such ignorance of anyone believing what putler says. I wouldn’t trust him with the weather report.
