Colonel General Andrei Mordvichev, responsible for the storming and destruction of Mariupol in the spring of 2022, has been appointed the new Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces of the Russian Armed Forces after Oleg Salyukov was removed from office.

Leading the troops of the Central Military District (CMD) since February 2023 , Mordvichev made the tactics of “meat assaults” the main method of Russian troops in Ukraine, noted military analyst Yan Matveyev. “It was due to endless infantry attacks and huge losses that Russian troops managed to reach Pokrovsk,” he wrote on the Telegram channel.

Mordvichev, 49, graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff in 2016. Before the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, he served in several Russian military districts in positions ranging from brigade commander to army commander. In 2021–2022, he commanded the 8th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District (SMD). In March 2022, the Ukrainian military announced  the death of Mordvichev, whom Russian media called a “breakthrough general,” in a strike by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on an airfield in Chernobaivka.

However, a video later emerged  showing Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and Mordvichev smiling and shaking hands, allegedly in Mariupol.  In the spring of 2022, the general commanded Russian troops besieging the city and capturing the Azovstal plant, where the Ukrainian Armed Forces had been holding out for months and civilians had been taking refuge. The Focus publication  reported that it was Mordvichev who ordered the storming of Azovstal.

According  to Human Rights Watch, Mordvichev, who led the Russian units, may be guilty of committing war crimes in Mariupol. This includes attacks on the city, blocking the delivery of humanitarian aid and preventing evacuations, as well as crimes against humanity.

In June 2023, the EU and Switzerland imposed sanctions on Mordvichev for supporting actions that threaten the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine. Under his command, Russian units, including the Central Military District troops, are participating in aggression against this country, the justification said. In November 2023, the general was included in Kyiv’s sanctions list.

The day before, on May 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree  removing General Oleg Salyukov from the post of commander-in-chief of the ground forces, appointing him deputy secretary of the Russian Security Council.

  1. One potato replaced another potato. The good news is that this potato invented the best method to get rid of pesky cockroaches faster than any other way, by meat assaults. Maybe now we’ll see more of them and get even higher daily death rates for the vermin.

  2. This clown didn’t invent meat puppet assaults. That accolade belongs solely to Stalin who realised that human life was more expendable than bullets.
