The head of KAMAZ told Putin that the company was operating stably after a sales collapse and a 40 billion ruble loss.

 5 May 2026

KAMAZ continues to operate steadily despite declining sales and a rift with foreign partners, company CEO Sergey Kogogin stated at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “2022 has been a serious test for us, as we have undergone a drastic reorientation of our goals and objectives… I can assure you that KAMAZ has not stopped for a single day,” Kogogin said.

According to him, before the war with Ukraine, the company was “closely integrated into the global automotive industry,” but afterwards,  it was forced to bid farewell to its European partners, including the German concern Daimler, which owned 15% of the shares, “until better times.” Nevertheless, KAMAZ managed to “maintain operational capability” and establish component production, Kogogin reported.

The announcement came amid a sharp decline in the concern’s financial performance. According to Avtostat Info, KAMAZ sales will plummet by 20.7% in 2025, to  18,300 units. The company’s net loss under IFRS amounted to 43 billion rubles—the first time since 2019 that the company has posted a negative balance.

The concern itself  reported  sales of 38,400 trucks. Experts attributed the two-fold difference to deliveries to the Ministry of Defense, which are not reflected in vehicle registration data.

KamAZ heavy truck sales fell by 16.1% to 14,500 units. The decline continued at the beginning of 2026, reaching 15%.  Kogogin previously  stated that the company does not expect to make a profit by the end of 2026 and hopes to at least break even. In April, KamAZ announced plans to return to a four-day week starting June 1 and reduce production.

The reasons cited were “weak market growth prospects and pressure from remaining imported equipment from Chinese manufacturers.” The decision to implement a four-day workweek had already been made in August 2025, amid a collapse in the commercial vehicle market of nearly 60% in the first half of the year. The plant returned to its normal schedule in November, thanks to a large order from law enforcement agencies, but the situation has now worsened again.

Kogogin stated that the truck market is in a deep crisis due to the high key interest rate, inflation, oversupply in 2023, and overstocked warehouses in 2024. He noted that there are no signs of improvement yet and predicted a 20% decline in truck sales in 2026.

According to Avtostat, approximately 9,000 trucks were registered in the first 13 weeks of this year—28% fewer than the previous year.
