The Guardian: Russia received weapons from Iraq through Iranian smuggling networks

Russia received weapons and ammunition from Iraq for the war in Ukraine with the help of smugglers from Iran, according to the British newspaper The Guardian. The publication learned about this from unnamed representatives of the Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq and regional intelligence services.

Iran handed over an Iranian-made Bavar 373 anti-aircraft missile system to Russia, and also returned the Russian S-300 air defense system, which Tehran had previously bought from Moscow, said a newspaper source who helped organize the transfer.

On March 26, one of the units of the Popular Mobilization Forces transported hand grenade launchers and anti-tank missiles from Iraq to Iran. The Iranian military sent the cargo by sea to Russia, said the commander of the unit responsible for transporting across the border. On April 1, the Popular Mobilization Forces transported two Brazilian-made Astros II multiple rocket launchers to Iran.

These days, according to The Guardian, three cargo ships capable of carrying military cargo crossed the Caspian Sea from the city of Bandar Anzeli in Iran to Astrakhan in Russia. One ship sailed under the flag of Iran, two more – under the flag of Russia.
