The Fighter Jet Sweden Built for a War That Never Came Is Finally Getting Its Fight (video commentary)

07/29/2026

Britain just pledged £300 million to help Ukraine buy 16 Saab Gripen E fighters, an aircraft Sweden spent four decades designing for a Russian invasion that never came to Swedish soil. Ukraine gets a jet built from the ground up for exactly its situation: dispersed road-basing, sub-ten-minute turnarounds, and a Meteor missile that closes the sensor gap against Russia’s Su-35.

The donated older jets could arrive by 2027. The new-build squadron isn’t landing until 2029, and a lot can happen in a war between now and then.
